The Follow-Up Consultation: Turning Nutrition Information into Action
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt after more than 23 years in practice is this: Patients rarely need more information.
Most of them already know they should eat more vegetables, drink more water, plan their meals, and sleep better. They’ve heard it all before. What they really need is help figuring out how to make it work in their messy, unpredictable, real lives.
That is where the magic of a good follow-up consultation happens. If you find yourself spending your follow-ups repeating the same nutrition education, it might be time to change your approach.
Shift from Teaching to Troubleshooting
I’ve noticed that my most impactful follow-up consultations aren’t the ones where I spend 30 minutes teaching—they’re the ones where I spend 30 minutes talking. We talk about the birthday party that went off the rails, the busy work week, or the child who refused every vegetable known to mankind.
The real work happens when we move beyond education and start problem-solving. Instead of saying, “Let’s go through balanced meals again,” try asking:
- “How did those breakfast ideas work for you?”
- “Which lunch option felt easiest to prep?”
- “What specific barrier got in the way this week?”
The Mastering Meals Difference
We created the Mastering Meals series at Just4Dietitians to give your patients practical, real-life meal ideas they can actually use. They work beautifully as a talking point during consultations and become a valuable reference long after the appointment is over.
Our collection includes guides for Breakfast, Lunch, Supper, Snacks, Drinks, Kids’ Lunch, Braai, and seasonal variety. Save nearly R600 when you purchase our bundle of 6!
