As Dietitians, We Can’t Ignore This Anymore: Low Carb in Practice

Why Dietitians Can No Longer Ignore the Role of Low Carb Nutrition

Almost every day, I sit across from patients battling the same set of challenges: stubborn weight gain, fatty liver disease, PCOS, and a constant, draining exhaustion around food. Most of these patients arrive at my office feeling completely defeated, carrying the weight of years of failed dieting and a deep-seated fear of carbohydrates.

As dietitians, we see the real human cost of this metabolic struggle. In South Africa, the numbers are becoming impossible to ignore. We are seeing obesity, insulin resistance, and Type 2 Diabetes developing at younger ages than we ever saw in the past.

The Need for Honest Conversations

Recently, a group discussion with fellow dietitians highlighted a shared sentiment: we need more honest, nuanced conversations about Low Carb nutrition. We don’t need more social media noise, extreme declarations, or the demonization of food groups. Instead, we need practical, balanced discussions about:

  • What the current scientific evidence actually says.
  • Which specific patient populations clinically benefit from this approach.
  • How to apply these principles realistically within a private practice setting.

Mastering Low Carb Nutrition: CPD Webinar

To facilitate these conversations, I’ve developed an HPCSA-registered webinar designed to equip you with the tools to navigate these clinical challenges with confidence and compassion. This session is designed to help you provide better care without creating fear around food.

What You Will Gain

By attending, you will earn 4 CPD points. The activity includes attendance of the live webinar, access to the primary scientific article, and completion of the questionnaire to validate your learning.

We will cover:

  • The pathophysiology of insulin resistance and progression to T2DM.
  • Practical implementation strategies for the private practice space.
  • Sustainability, patient adherence, and behaviour change.
  • Communication techniques that prioritize patient peace of mind over dietary restriction.

I would love for you to join me for this discussion. At the end of the day, we all simply want to help our patients better—while remaining balanced, evidence-based, and compassionate in our approach.
